DOMS: Understanding and Relieving Muscle Soreness

DOMS : comprendre et soulager les courbatures musculaires

What are DOMS?

Contrary to popular belief, muscle soreness is not caused by lactic acid. DOMS result from micro-tears in muscle fibers during eccentric contractions. Peak intensity: 24 to 72 hours after exercise.

6 Effective Methods to Relieve DOMS

1. Cryotherapy

  • Cold bath (10-15°C) 10-15 min: the most scientifically effective method
  • Final cold shower (30-60 sec) after your usual shower

2. Massage and Pressotherapy

  • Light foam roller: 30-60 sec/area, low pressure
  • Gentle massage gun (speed 1-2): 2 min per muscle
  • Pressotherapy boots: 20-30 min for complete drainage

3. Active Recovery

A 20-30 minute walk, gentle yoga, or light cycling improve circulation and accelerate the elimination of inflammatory by-products.

4. Anti-inflammatory Nutrition

  • Proteins (20-30g/meal) for muscle repair
  • Tart cherries: anti-inflammatory anthocyanins
  • Turmeric + black pepper, omega-3s (fatty fish)

5. Heat for Stiffness

Warm bath 38-40°C with magnesium salt, hot water bottle, sauna if DOMS manifests as stiffness rather than pain.

6. Sleep

Muscle repair occurs during deep sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours per night, in a cool room at 18-20°C.

DOMS vs. Injury

DOMS are bilateral and diffuse. Consult if: localized unilateral pain, persistence beyond 5-7 days, or significant swelling/heat.

Conclusion

DOMS indicate that your body is adapting. With the right recovery tools from Tout pour le corps, significantly reduce their intensity and duration.
